American bulldog puppies grow up to be stout, sturdy animals with strong jaws. They are shorthaired dogs with a smooth coat. They tend to shed some but not heavily. If you are looking for American bulldog puppies for sale here are some things you need to know.

Their coat color has historically been primarily white but has now evolved to include red, brow, black, fawn and brindle.

Large litters are produced by the female sometimes exceeding eleven or more. The male puppy grows to a height of 22 to 28 inches and will weigh 70 to 110 pounds. The female will be about 20 to 26 inches high and weigh 60 to 90 pounds.

There are two types of American bulldogs, the Johnson type and the Scott type. They are named after the two early breeders who developed the American bulldog puppy, John D. Johnson and Allen Scott. The two types are generally referred to as the Classic or Bully and the Standard or Performance type.
Scott’s dogs look like a large Pitbull. The Pitbull was a part of the breeding program so many American bulldogs have Pitbull blood. The Johnson type, on the other hand, more resembles a boxer and may be confused with a boxer.

American bulldog puppies are cheerful and loyal animals that get along well with children as long as they are socialized and trained at an early age. Because of their rather large size they are better suited to homes with older children and should be monitored around small children. The concern here is not that the dog would attack an infant but that it might roll over or sit on a small child. These dogs can actually be trained to know the difference between an adult and a child and can be taught to be especially gentle with children.

These American bulldogs puppies are smart animals and can be a bit headstrong. They need strong training as when young to be certain of having no behavior problems later on. Like many breeds they can become destructive and poorly behaved if not trained early. Training should start as soon as the puppy is brought home. These are dogs that need a good deal of physical exercise so plan that into your daily activities.
These dogs have a high prey drive and should be controlled around smaller animals.

American bulldog puppies have a life span of about 10 to 12 years so be prepared for a commitment lasting this long.

Some of the more common health problems can include hip and elbow dysplasia, skin problems, kidney problems and thyroid disorder. Most of these health problems are limited to certain genetic line and are not necessarily common to the breed as a whole.
