The Beagle Dog is a Hunter

The Beagle dog dates back to England in the 16th century where the English frequently owned packs of hounds. The Beagle was a smaller type of hound and was used to hunt small prey. The breed was developed in England and then later in America. By the late 19th century the Beagle had been refined through breeding and was becoming widely known and popular in America.
Hunters still employ these dogs in packs today and the Beagle has a reputation for being a faithful and friendly pet for families. These are sturdy-built dogs of small to medium size whose sense of smell makes him a great hunter but their wandering habits can get into trouble. The Beagle dog comes in two different size categories. The larger is 13-15 inches tall and the smaller is less than 13 inches. The larger variety weighs 20-30 pounds while the smaller dogs are around 18-20 pounds.
If you find Beagle dogs for sale you can expect their colors to vary from red, lemon, or tan along with white as the second color or tri-color of black, brown and white. Occasionally a solid tan or white is seen. You may find Beagle dog pictures on the Internet, which would help you choose a color. The Beagle dog has brown eyes that are very attractive too so many people. They seemed to have learned to display a forlorn look that seems to say, ” I need a friend, would you like to be my friend”. This is a long eared dog but his ears are not as long as the Basset hound. If you pull the Beagle dog ears forward they should be as long as his nose. These floppy ears hang near the head otherwise. The length of his body is greater than his height. He has a relatively long tail which sticks upward, which allows him to be seen when hunting in tall grass. Beagles dogs coats are firm and short. He is a shedding animal. The Beagle dog has a double coat like the Siberian husky, which consists of a fine first coat for warmth and a courser outer coat for water repellency. It is the outer coat that sheds most heavily in warm weather.
The Beagle dog makes a good family pet because of his good-natured manner but he might not mix well with other pets. You must properly socialize you new Beagle puppy with other pets or he will try to hunt and capture the other animals.
They are people loving animals and should not be left alone or they will howl and disturb the neighbors.
The Beagle dog is a good traveling companion. Their breeding as hunters allows them to adapt to new surroundings readily. Thorough training is necessary to keep them from running away. They are very amenable to a variety of living environments as long as they are allowed to enjoy plenty of physical activity.
Don’t forget a leash is necessary for Beagles or a sturdy fence around your back yard along with careful training. The minute they pick up the scent of another animal they will be off on the search of their newfound prey.
Beagles do get ear infections easily so be sure to check their ears frequently. Some of the other problems sometimes found in Beagles are eye problems, heart disease, epilepsy, and chondoplasia, which causes their front legs to be deformed.
