Breeding Discus Varieties Together

When breeding fish together it is easy to make a few mistakes here and there, but there are some basic rules that will keep your fry on track to becoming the Discus fish you dream them to be. Discus are notoriously delicate, and more is known about them today than ever before so if you thought this hobby out of reach think again, and see if you can’t make this work for you.- Selective breeding is a legacy, a promise that you make to the animals you are producing that you will set them up to be the very best they can possibly bee in life. It is no small coincidence that there are so many beautiful varieties of Discus available, and all were carefully produced to be exceptional by the breeders that created them. So when starting out to find a pair, buy an unrelated lot of the same color of fish, thus insuring that when a pair is ultimately selected, the fry will have a predictable outcome. You will not get to pick and choose who picks who, but in a lot of ten only your most attractive pair should be allowed to reproduce, the others being used only in show tanks or sold to pet stores. Cull ruthlessly, do not continue breeding a pair simply because you like them, but instead retire them if their fry isn’t phenomenal. I will always take a smaller lot of better fry over a larger lot of less desirable fish.
- Discus fish aren’t the king of the freshwater fishes for no reason, and few animals come close to being as graceful and beautiful as a gently weaving pair of Discus. Watching the fry you worked so hard to bring about grow bigger every day is also extremely rewarding, and soon you will be looking at another generation of fry, as magnificent as were their parents before them.
