Bulldog Engles or the English bulldog has become a well known and well liked pet for Americans living in both home and apartments. These dogs were bred for fighting and in spite of their dubious past they are now known for their gentle personalities and loyalty to their owners. Good breeding practices have turned this originally vicious animal into a loving pet.
Even though they are fairly large dogs they also tend to be affectionate “lap dogs” forgetting their size when wanting a little attention. They are brave animals and make good watchdogs showing their consistent loyalty too their masters. English bulldogs are social animals who tend to get along with many people making them good family pets.
The exercise requirement for this dog is only very moderate making them ideal for the owner with physical limitations.
To be such an amenable and easy-going dog this gentle breed has an ironically fierce appearance. He can very intimidating to the unknowledgable. The English bulldog has been around for centuries but breeding them with Pugs has reduced their large size to a smaller dog more suitable as a pet. The bull Mastiff is also in the bloodline of the bulldog. They now typically reach only 14-15 inches in height but have very sturdy, stocky little bodies. An average male or female weighs around 50 pounds.
Some of their physical features are wide shoulders, big heads, drooping cheeks, and stout physiques. These dogs come in a variety of colors such as brindle, fawn brindle, and red brindle. Other colors are black, grey, bronze, and red all with white markings. Piebald markings and black masks are also common in bulldogs.
English bulldogs tolerate only moderate temperature extremes. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke can be problems for bulldogs living in hot humid climates.
They make good animals for people with neighbors nearby as they are not prone to barking. These carefree and relaxed dogs are people loving and kind but on rare occasion can be a little stubborn.
Breeding issues have introduced a fair number of health problems into English bulldogs. Their skin wrinkles around the facial area must be cleaned and cared for. Some of their health problems include, knee problems, hip dysplasia, skin problems, eye problems, and an elongated soft palate. Breathing problems are sometimes caused by their short windpipes and upturned noses. Owners of bulldogs must get accustomed to the fact that these dogs snore a lot.
Take special care of your animal around water. Their front-heavy builds make them poor swimmers. They like water due to their lack of tolerance for heat but should be allowed only in shallow water unsupervised. If you go boating or enjoy the lake be sure to buy a life jacket for your dog.
