Cats are very communicative animals. They seek attention in numerous ways. One of the most popular ways is with a meow, usually when they are in need of something specific. However, as a pet owner it is sometimes a bit difficult to understand what a cat is trying to convey. These are just a few reasons why a cat meows.
One of the biggest reasons that a cat meows is to communicate the fact that he is hungry, thirsty or a combination of the two. If the cat is used to getting treats, on a regular basis, he might communicating this way in effort to get an extra treat even when his regular food bowl is full.
Purchasing a continuous-feed food and water bowls is an excellent way to make sure a cat always has plenty to eat and drink, even if they are home alone for a day or two. This greatly reduces the chance of hunger induced meowing.
If a cat spends time both inside and outdoors it is possible that he is meowing to go outside or to come back into the house. Some pet owners have solved this problem with the purchase of a cat door. It works exactly the same as the dog door except that it is a smaller version.
Many times a cat will meow simply because he wants attention. Most often meowing kittens just want to play. Older cats might find contentment lying on their owners lap or at their feet. It’s also possible that the cat just wants to be petted.

I have a very vocal cat. The most talkative one I have ever met. Around our house for a long time he decided at 5 in the morning it was time for my husband and I to get up to pay attention to him. He would get up and start his “death meow” and stop when he received the lovings he wanted. When I come home or wake up early he follows me around meowing requesting what he preceives as necessary daily lovings.
