Dog Food Ingredients to Avoid

As a dog owner, you are responsible for your pet. That means it’s up to you to provide shelter, food, and comfort. When it comes to food, many people simply buy a bag of whatever dog food is cheapest at the grocery store and consider it taken care of. But many average bags of dog food have ingredients like meat by-products, preservatives, chemicals, and grains like corn and wheat. You need to make sure your dog is getting the best treatment. You wouldn’t want to eat meat by-products so why should you make your dog? When purchasing dog food for your new pet, make sure you avoid these ingredients listed on any commercial dog food.

Animal Fat

Animal fat is a generic term used by manufacturers to cover any generic animal products that they have included in the food. In the past, some manufacturers even used rendered dog and cat product in their food. While this is no longer a practice, it’s important to remember that the term “animal fat” could mean anything.

Grains

Grains like corn, wheat, and soy may be nutritious for humans in moderation, but your animals shouldn’t be eating them. Many dogs are allergic to these grain products and they can cause problems like skin irritations or diarrhea. Grain products like barley, oatmeal, and brown rice are ok.

By-products

Meat by-products include all of the parts of an animal that a human won’t eat. Things like the head, feet, lungs, intestines, spleens, livers, etc. These products are ground up and included in many pet food products. If you won’t eat them, why should you make your dog?

The best way to avoid these products all together is to buy all-natural, organic dog food products, like the kind made by Evanger’s or Blue Buffalo. Both Evanger’s and Blue Buffalo avoid these three ingredients and use only things like meats and vegetables in their products.
