Choosing puppy names can be a fun experience for the whole family. Sometimes it is a good idea to have the parents narrow the choice down to a few names and let the children make the final choice so they have some input. Thinking through your name choice will give you a name that you will always enjoy and will please everyone. Rushing into your choice might leave your friends wondering why you chose the name.

Each family member will probably have a short list of possible names, however; here are some suggestions for coming up with a really good name. To come up with really cute puppy names takes a little imagination as well as some common sense. You probably would not name a large breed dog something like PeeWee unless you were obviously trying to be funny. You certainly do not want to be embarrassed when someone asks your dog’s name.

Consider you dog’s size now and after it becomes full-grown. Take into account your dog’s behavior and personality when choosing puppy names. This would involve getting to know the dog before choosing a name. It is probably best not choose a name before bringing the dog home. Naming a dog Pal who turns out to be nervous or unfriendly might be a bad choice.

Do keep your names for puppies short and simple. Puppies respond to names with fewer than three syllables as opposed to longer names.  Choosing a longer name can make it difficult to teach the dog his name and make it more difficult for you say.

As you are training your new puppy you will be teaching him his name as well as other voice commands. You will be teaching him to sit, stay, fetch, etc. Certainly you would not want to chose a name for your dog that sounds like a command or rhymes with a common command.  As an example “Bo” sounds too much like “no” which might confuse your puppy.

Take a look at the dog’s physical features to determine if anything stands out that would make a cute name. Look at the coat color as well as the eyes, ears, nose, and tail. Features that are obvious to all could make great puppy names.

You might want to consider your own personality and interests when choosing a name for your puppy. If you are a sports fan and have a large breed dog you might want to name it after a famous football or basketball player.

If the common animal names don’t give your dog the dignity your desire you might consider some human names.  It is common and acceptable to give your dog a proper name just as you would a child.

Considering your dog’s breed or country of origin may reveal a good name choice. A cute little Chihuahua could have any number of Spanish language names. A German shepherd might be called Franz or Freda.

Be sure to search the many web sites on the Internet that offer puppy names.  You can find girl puppy names as well as puppy names for boys.  Names are often categorized by breed and country of origin so picking a cute puppy name should not be difficult.
