Puppy training pads can be a very useful tool for potty training your new puppy. Using these pads in the correct manner is critical to your success. Improper use can result in a frustrated dog and owner.
First we will take advantage of the fact that a puppy does not want to potty where he eats or sleeps. Begin by providing him with a crate appropriate for his breed size. He will feel safe and secure in his crate and he will naturally retreat there. Locate the crate in a limited size area such as a laundry room. Keeping him confined to a smaller room will reduce confusion as to where he should eat, sleep, and potty.
Place the puppy training pads away from his crate and bowls. You may want to use more than one pad initially to make it easier for him. One way to control the expense of using these pads is to look for Simple Solution puppy training pads. These are economy puppy training pads. Also, you may want to get a puppy training pad holder to keep the pads from sliding around.
Feed your puppy on a set, regular schedule so that he will have to potty on a regular schedule. He is most likely going to need to go after eating and after naps. You will need to observe him to determine when he needs to go and your job of observing will be easier if his potty schedule is more predictable. Signs that he needs to go are crying, pacing, and sniffing.
When he seems to need to go place him on the puppy training pad and use a simple command like “go now”. Use the same command each time. Then walk away and ignore him while he does his business. Ignoring the dog will help him avoid distractions and help him take of business.
Be sure to praise him and reinforce correct behavior with a treat. Never punish him or scold him for incorrect behavior.
If you want to teach him to go outside you may do as follows. Once theĀ pads are firmly reinforced as the correct potty place you can allow him to wander into more areas of the house. Start moving the training pads closer to an exit door a little at a time. As you get the pad next to the door take him outside to go. You may want to place another pad outdoors initially since he associates the pads with his potty place. Eventually you can eliminate the outdoor pad and take him to same area to potty each time. Your puppy pads training will be complete.
