Woodpecker Deterrents That Work

While there are often very simple solutions like bird spikes to getting rid of many kinds of birds, others aren’t so easy to scare away.  Pigeons aren’t too hard to convince to move to a different location, but woodpeckers are another story. In fact, woodpeckers are in a whole different category because they aren’t interested in eating things from people’s balconies or nesting in garages. They can cause big problems though, mainly by making lots of noise and pecking holes in the side of your house. Both of these are significant problems, because as anybody who has tried to sleep while a woodpecker is right outside their window knows, it is next to impossible. Likewise, if you live in a log cabin or even a house with wooden siding, the damage a woodpecker can inflict on the structure of your house can be very high.

Fortunately, there are some great woodpecker deterrents you can buy to help you scare them away. If you don’t want to spend much money, you can try using reflective ribbon. Most birds are afraid of reflecting light in their eyes, and if you string this ribbon around the woodpecker’s favorite tree, it probably will not come around anymore. The problem is that this isn’t a very good solution for protecting your entire house.

A much better, and comprehensive option is to get what is called a sonic repeller. Like its name sounds, these gadgets produce a high-pitched replica of a real birds’ danger call. Recorded from birds in the wild, they sound real and work by scaring birds away. One thing that you need to make sure of is that you get one that is specifically designed for woodpeckers. The reason is because most of these machines are made to focus on smaller birds like pigeons, seagulls, and crows. Woodpeckers have an entirely different call, and there is a repeller that is designed just for them. If you want to go this route, you’ll probably have to spend at least $250. This might sound like a lot of money, but is actually a small price compared to the cost of repairing siding that is badly damaged by woodpecker.
